The results presented are based on questions asked in the national public health survey: Do you have any of the following discomforts or symptoms? Headaches or migraines? Worry or anxiety? Tiredness? Difficulty sleeping? Have you at any time in the last 12 months been in a situation where you have seriously considered taking your own life*? Have you at any time in the last 12 months attempted to take your own life*? Do you currently feel stressed? Has a doctor ever diagnosed you with depression? Do you struggle with loneliness and isolation?
(Very) Good mental health is based on the Short Warwick Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale (SWEMWBS): Self-perceived situation in the past two weeks: I've been feeling optimistic about the future, I've been feeling useful, I've been feeling relaxed, I've been dealing with problems well, I've been thinking clearly, I've been feeling close to other people, I've been able to make up my own mind about things.
Psychological distress is based on the Kessler 6 instrument: In the past month, how often did you feel... ...nervous? ...hopeless? ...restless or fidgety? ...so depressed that nothing could cheer you up? ...that everything was an effort? ...worthless?
The measurement for impaired psychological wellbeing is based on the General Health Questionnaire 5. This measurement has not been updated since 2018, when the questions were removed from the survey.
*The question has changed over time.
The national public health survey is a sample survey of the country's population aged 16 and older. The population aged 16 to 84 are covered before 2021. The values presented are not adjusted for age. Until 2016, the national public health survey was conducted annually. As of 2018, it has been conducted every two years, however the sample size has doubled compared to the period up to and including 2016.
