The indicator is defined as number of liters of pure alcohol that can be afforded for the annual median income in the population. The annual median income is measured as the disposable household income weighted by household size. The indicator is divided into the beverage categories spirits, wine, beer and cider/mixed drinks. The median income is calculated for different groups of the population aged 20 years and older.
